Information Sciences Building

The Information Sciences Building houses the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. The following operating hours and policies are in place for your comfort and safety.

IS Building Hours

Monday - Thursday

7:00 am - 10:00 pm

Friday   

7:00 am - 6:00 pm

Saturday

8:30 am - 6:00 pm

The building will be locked during all official University breaks and holidays. It is University policy that unauthorized entry into the building outside of normal hours is considered to be trespassing.

If the IS Building is locked during normal operating hours and a member of the staff is not available to admit you, please contact campus police at 412-624-4040 to request access to the building. Campus police will request to see your Pitt ID before unlocking the door for you.

When the IS Building is closed, feel free to take advantage of nearby spaces specifically intended for student use such as the Commons Room in the Cathedral of Learning, the William Pitt Union, Hillman Library, etc. These facilities have extended hours, comfortable work spaces, and refreshments.

PhD Collaboratory (8th Floor)

For use by SIS PhD students. Access to this closed facility is limited to iSchool PhD students. You can enter by swiping your Pitt ID.

Additionally, doctoral and graduate students working on research with faculty will be granted access to the IS Building an individual basis as needed. If such access is required, please contact Sharon Bindas to complete the proper access-granting paperwork. Individuals who are granted special access to the building may not admit anyone else into the building outside of the above normal operating hours.

Room Reservation & Event Coordination

Students, faculty, and staff are welcome to use any of the IS Building's classrooms or common spaces as a study area, group work space, meeting room, or event space provided that it is not reserved for another use and that this occurs during normal operating hours.

To reserve a room for your meeting or event, please complete the online Room Reservations & Event Coordination form. In addition to reserving a room, this form will allow you to request event coordination assistance such as event set-up and break-down, guest speaker logistics, advertising/marketing help, refreshments, and technology/media needs.
