SIS Branding & Logos

  • SIS is in the midst of a branding and visioning campaign. When an official branding and style guide for SIS is completed it will be posted here.
  • The "color bar" was retired in August 2015 and replaced with a neutralized blue version (see SIS Stationary, Headers, and Letterhead below). Please do not use any print or digital materials that include the old color bar. An official branding and style guide will explain this change in further detail, but until it's released, please email the Director of Marketing & Communications if you have a file or document that needs to be updated immediately.
  • Do not use any of SIS' other retired logos or branding pieces including the gold Pitt Information Sciences icon used on social media or the old yellow SIS logo. Please email the Director of Marketing & Communications if you're uncertain about the usability of a logo.

Pitt Branding & Logos

If you are searching for a logo or image to represent SIS in an official capacity (e.g., a sponsorship, on a conference poster, on a Web site) please email the Director of Marketing & Communications.

  • University Seal: Please do not use the University's logo (seal) without reading the University Graphics Standards manual below first. If you wish to add the official seal to any print or web materials, please email the Director of Marketing & Communications for file access and advice.
  • University Graphics Standards: Download [PDF]. Institutional identity is the actual defined graphic standards and applications of those graphics for the University of Pittsburgh. Institutional identity determines how, when, where, why, and to whom the University's image (brand) is presented in various forms of media, through both print and electronic methods. It is these standards that interpret colors, fonts, applications, placement, messages, do’s, don’ts, and so on.

Copy Editing Assistance

SIS Marketing & Communications team can provide copy editing assistance for faculty papers only on an as-available basis. At this time, SIS does not employee a dedicated copy editor, so availability of this service is limited. Please email the Director of Marketing & Communications your paper (in MS WORD format only) along with responses to each of the following questions so that we may assess your request:

  1. Will a journal be publishing this paper? If so, which journal?
  2. What style manual/specifications does the publication require?
  3. Do you have a deadline from the publisher for final submission?
  4. What reference manager did you use (EndNote, Mendeley, etc) and is the file available if needed?
  5. What scope of work are you looking for in regards to editing help? Please choose a category:

a) Light Edit: editing for spelling; grammar; punctuation; usage; basic formatting (inserting head levels and approximate placement of art; editing tables, figures, and lists; notifying Author of any unusual production requirements.)

b) Medium Edit: editing line-by-line for style; clarity and consistency; eliminating jargon; polishing language; bibliographic style; verification of in-text citations; headings, sequence, and adherence to specs; formal formatting of manuscript for print

c) Heavy Edit: writing original content; substantive rewriting of content; fact checking; research; comprehensive structure and logic edit; conceptual editing; creating or recasting tables or figures; checking or correcting reading level; providing or editing art; providing or changing system of citations; editing index; writing or editing captions or credit lines; writing running heads; providing front matter (prelims), cover copy, or CIP data; metrication

6. Acknowledgment of your editor(s) in the final paper/document is required. Are you willing to include an acknowledgment of the editor for work in scopes (a) or (b), or a co-author listing for work in scope (c) ?

About the editing process:

  • All editing will be done via Microsoft Word with "track changes" turned on, making inline edits and inserting comment balloons where the editor needs your clarification.--please make sure you have access to a current version of this software.
  • Once the first pass is complete, the editor will send the Word Doc back to you for your review. Please ensure your copy of Word is configured to show “All Markup” with “Only comments and formatting in balloons” or you will not able to see the editor's changes and questions.
  • Please “accept” changes that you agree with, or insert a comment balloon stating that you don't wish to accept a particular change. Using the “reject” changes buttons may lead to duplicated work. Please respond to any questions the editor left for you in comment balloons by inserting your own comment directly below their question.
  • Reaching a "camera ready" paper typically requires a few rounds of edits and feedback, which requires some time. Anticipate a 10-business day turnaround time from the date an editor accepts your request and specifications for this reason. Heavy editing may require additional time, while lightly edited manuscripts may be completed sooner.
  • We are unable to edit references without the linked reference library file.
