News / Apply Now for New Online CAS in Health Sciences Librarianship

Applications are now being accepted for the new post-master's certificate program in Health Sciences Librarianship, which addresses the national need for advanced education for librarians and information managers in the health sciences. The 15-credit Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) provides a focused curriculum, addressing current issues in health sciences librarianship, and is offered online — lending flexibility to working students. The CAS in Health Sciences Librarianship is offered through a partnership between the iSchool’s ALA-accredited Library and Information Science program and the world-class Health Sciences Library System at the University of Pittsburgh.  The development of the program was funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

Highly qualified health sciences librarians are needed as the health care industry focuses on evidence-based medicine that is based on the rapid translation of basic research discoveries into clinical care and disease prevention.  Health sciences librarians play a key role in helping practitioners and researchers keep pace with the rapidly expanding knowledge base. Health sciences librarians require in-depth knowledge of the health care information environment and high levels of skill in managing health sciences collections and resources and providing library services and instruction for the health care team. Graduates will be prepared for advanced professional positions in health sciences libraries in academic medical centers, hospitals, public health agencies, research institutes, and other health care settings.
