The Dr. Joan Brest Friedberg Scholarship

For part-time Pennsylvania residents admitted to the MLIS program

The Dr. Joan Brest Friedberg Scholarship provides a scholarship to a part-time, in-state student enrolled in the Master of Library and Information Science program. The scholarship is awarded on the basis of the candidate’s potential to contribute to the field, written statement of interest, and GPA of 3.0 or higher. Scholarship candidates must be employed in and/or express an interest in and an ability to pursue a career in public librarianship. 

I. Intent of Scholarship

Dr. Joan Brest Friedberg co-founded the "Beginning with Books" program in 1984. "Beginning with Books" was created as an early literacy intervention project, to bring reading and literature to the attention of children and families and to foster in them a life-long love of reading. She is an alumna of the University of Pittsburgh.
