School of Information Sciences

Welcome from the Dean

Welcome to the School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. I am pleased to introduce you to the degree programs, faculty, research projects, and students that make our school an invigorating place to learn.

SIS is one of the nation's pioneering schools in the education of information professionals. For more than 100 years, we have been providing students with the skills and knowledge to become leaders in the information science discipline and professions. Our graduates have found successful careers in industry, libraries, archives, healthcare, government, nonprofit, and education. You can do the same with a degree from the School of Information Sciences.

Our school is positioned at the nexus of technology, information, and society. The challenges and opportunities confronting society in the 21st century require professionals who are not only technologically capable, but also are skilled in the management of information. They must also understand how information and technology must be melded to serve the needs of the individual, industry, and society.

I hope that you will join us at the School of Information Sciences. Our innovative programs, our faculty, and our challenging research projects will enable you to become a leader in harnessing an invaluable resource, information. Come to the school and find out how you can be a vital part of any major organization.

More Than ...

Our programs look at more than the system, the archive, or the network. Students are taught to consider the needs of the end user.
