School of Information Sciences - Information Science & Technology Program

Welcome from the Chair

Thank you for your interest in the Graduate Information Science and Technology Program at the iSchool. As technology advances, the demand for information professionals grows exponentially. Industry, government, and healthcare agencies — virtually any type of business — are seeking people who can effectively and efficiently manage information and technology.

Our curriculum balances theoretical principles with hands-on experience in storing and retrieving information, communicating information among systems, the interaction between people and information systems, and the role of information systems and technologies in both business and society.

By enrolling in the iSchool at the University of Pittsburgh, you will have amazing opportunities to work with faculty engaged in leading-edge research in the Information Science and Technology field. Pitt is one of the top 25 public research universities, and this allows students access to research projects and laboratories that will develop the next generation of information technologies. As the University has its home in a major urban area, you'll have the opportunity to take internships with major US corporations. Such opportunities will give you practical hands-on experience and a chance to network with industry leaders.

Our goal is to educate people who are efficient on the job from day one, while providing the foundation for them to prosper professionally as their careers progress. Thus, you'll be able to build systems and manage information using today's technology—you'll also have the ability to design and master the technology of the future.

Thank you for your interest in the iSchool. Please browse through our Website for more details about the stimulating degree programs and the community here at the School.  If you need further information, I’d welcome the opportunity to discuss the benefits of earning your degree here.

Sincerely,

Martin Weiss
