The School of Information Sciences (http://www.sis.pitt.edu) at the University of Pittsburgh is seeking a candidate for a faculty position in the Library and Information Science Program, to start no later than Fall Term 2008.

SIS is a charter member of the i-Schools Consortium with a one hundred six year history of pioneering the Information professions.  In the recent past, SIS has recruited a number of new faculty with expertise in Information Visualization, Sociology of Knowledge, Digital Libraries, Cataloguing and Classification, Information Security and Software Engineering.  The School’s intellectual foundation is grounded in the integrated study of people, information, and technology. This offers rich opportunities for interdisciplinary research, instruction, and service at the current frontier of the information sciences. The School emphasizes the synthesis of people, information and technology, and offers opportunities for research, instruction, and services spanning the needs of an information-intensive and increasingly-digital society.

The Program seeks candidates whose research and teaching interests span the digital environments of contemporary libraries and information services. Collaboration with SIS faculty in other areas of expertise is encouraged. Experience with distance education is a requirement.  Successful candidates are effective, proactive educators pursuing a visionary research agenda.  They will play a key role in charting the School’s future course as a leading i-School. 
 
SIS especially invites applicants who have an innovative approach to these core areas:

  • Cataloging and classification /Organization of Information
  • Digital preservation and archiving
  • Children and youth services
  • Collections management
  • Information behavior
  • Information retrieval and access
  • Leadership and management

The position requires an earned doctorate and the appointment is at the assistant professor level or at a rank commensurate with qualifications.  This is a non-tenure stream position.
