Through
the generosity of faculty, staff and alumni, the School
of Information Sciences is able to offer a number of
scholarships and awards to students within SIS. These
awards, designed to recognize exceptional students
in the School, usually include monetary prizes and
certificates of recognition. There are opportunities
for students in each of the SIS degree programs: Information
Science, Library and Information Science and Telecommunications.
These awards are in addition to other forms of student
support and financial aid offered by the School.
2006 William Z. Nasri Award
for Legal Issues in Information Handling
The Nasri award is made in recognition
of Dr. Nasri’s more than 30 years of service
to the School of Information Sciences and the
University of Pittsburgh. Students in Information
Science, Library and Information Science, and
Telecommunications are encouraged to submit papers
relating to legal issues involved in information
handling. Students in Pitt’s School of
Law are also eligible for the competition, which
carries a $500 award. Application Deadline:

2006 Catherine Ofiesh Orner Award
The Catherine Ofiesh Orner Award is presented annually
by the School of Information Sciences to the student
who prepares the best scholarly paper in Information
Science suitable for publication. The Award, named for
a distinguished alumna of the School, consists of a $500
cash prize and a certificate. Application Deadline: February
17, 2006
2006 Robert R. Korfhage Award
Established in 1998, the Korfhage Award honors the
late Professor Emeritus in the Department of Information
Science and Telecommunications. The Award,
a $500 cash prize, encourages collaborative research
between faculty and students through a paper addressing
Information Science including information retrieval,
user interfaces, and formal methods. Application
Deadline: February 17, 2006
Margaret Mary “Peg” Corbett Award
The Corbett Award was established in honor
of the late Margaret Mary Corbett, secretary to the
Chair of the Department of Library and Information
Sciences. The award honors the best dissertation
proposal approved in the doctoral students program
of the Department of Library and Information Science
over the preceding year.
Harold Lancour Award
The Lancour Award is named in honor of the
late Harold Lancour, founding dean of SIS. This $200
award is made possible by gifts from friends and
former students of the Dean. The Award reflects the
desire of the School and the University to recognize
academic excellence in the international librarianship
field in which Dr. Lancour was pre-eminent.
