And We Quote

Vartan Gregorian, president of the Carnegie Corporation, helped kick off the yearlong celebration of the School of Information Sciences’ 100 years of education on Thursday. He spoke on Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future at the Carnegie Lecture Hall. The former president of the New York Public Library offered the following observations about libraries:

• “Libraries are the most tolerant institutions we have...where people lower their voices and raise their minds.”

• “Libraries have always found a way to fit new media to traditional purposes.”

• “No university is greater than its library.”

• “The library is not an ossified relic...it is the DNA of our culture.”

• “No search engine can replace the library or the expert in it.”
