Randall Family Big Idea session
2:00– 3:00pm -- 3rd floor iSchool Collaboration Center (everyone)

This session will introduce the Randall Family Big Idea Competition (http://bigidea.pitt.edu).  This competition is designed to be an experience-based learning opportunity for Pitt students interested in finding a big idea and discovering how to take it to the next steps towards new venture creation.  There is $100,000 in total prize money that goes directly to the winning student teams.  For 2014, the Randall Family Big Idea competition is open to all Pitt students across all disciplines and all schools, and competing student teams are required to have members from at least two different schools.

This is an opportunity for all faculty, staff, and students in the iSchool to talk about ideas, get to know each other, etc. while enjoying light hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Thanks to the generous support of the iSchool Doctoral Guild, SISGO, and PRISM for making this event possible.

Career Preparation Checklist

Wes Lipschultz, Manager of Student Services, will review a list of recommended items and strategies for those on the job market, with references to resources offering further details as necessary.  This review will include but not be limited to: resumes, curriculum vitae, portfolios, social media, cover letters, mock interviews, informational interviews, phone interviews, behavioral based interviews, job search databases, networking, etiquette (dress code, lunch interviews, reference checks, etc.), and questions/negotiations (salary, transportation, benefits, etc.).

Deanna Burkett, Outreach and Consultation Coordinator in the Counseling Center, will share strategies and resources to help students cope with stress.  Specifically, she will introduce mindfulness strategies and the services offered by the Stress-Free Zone at Pitt.

iSchool students from all programs have many skills applicable to business environments, but there are times when business jargon may hide a good fit between you and a potential job.  Join Jeff Lawson, Director of Distance Education, eLearning Partnerships and Outreach in the iSchool, in de-mystifying some basic business concepts and jargon to help you as you prepare for your job search.

Beyond technology: using networks as a metaphor

Kostas Pelechrinis, assistant professor in Telecommunications and Networking, will lead a discussion on how the concepts behind the new emerging field of network science can be applied to make sense of information challenges in many different settings.  This is meant for technical and non-technical audiences alike.
