October 7, 2011 @ 1:00 pm

Open discussion for faculty and master’s students about the advisor/advisee relationship
Room 501 IS Building
Description: Faculty have a great deal to offer master’s students, but students need to make appropriate efforts in order to fully benefit from that relationship.  Nationally there is no standard outline for what the advisor/advisee relationship should be at the master’s level.  This session offers faculty and students a chance to review the University graduate advising guidelines, learn from each other what their advising expectations are, and share examples of what a healthy advising relationship looks like.

iSchool game night
Rooms 501 and 522 IS Building
Description:  Enjoy free food with us while sharing in a relaxed venue for socializing with other students in the School. We will have Wii and Xbox 360 Kinect games (Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution, Yoostar, and more) as well as board games (Jenga, Monopoly, Poker, Rummikub, Set, and more).

Description: Kelly Shaffer, the iSchool's Director of External Relations, will lead a workshop on how to write a resume and cover letter to target specific job postings.

Stress management

Description: Emily Pimpinella, a University Counseling Center postdoctoral fellow from Antioch University, will conduct a workshop on stress management for all iSchool students.  Lunch will be provided.

Description: This is an opportunity for faculty and doctoral students to talk informally about  research ideas, teaching issues, conferences, future plans, etc. while enjoying light hors d’oeuvres and adult beverages.

Crucial employment skills learned outside of the classroom
Room 403 IS Building
Description: Sandra Brandon, the iSchool's Chief of Operations and former CIO of Crayola, will lead a workshop on the skills employers are looking for that are not learned in the classroom and how to build those skills while in the iSchool at Pitt.
