This month, the iSchool will present the following activities:

November 4, 2011, 11:00 am – 12:00 noon

CourseWeb best practices session  
Room 1A04 IS Building
Description:  This student-requested session allows all student and faculty users of CourseWeb to share tricks and tips.  Students report that there are ways to use CourseWeb that they have only learned from their fellow classmates, and that individual course sites on CourseWeb vary quite a bit.  Participants can ask questions and share answers about using CourseWeb and setting up CourseWeb for an individual course.  Lunch will be provided.

Western PA Law Library Association information session (LIS only)
Room 522 IS
Description: WPLLA will introduce students to their association and discussing what some of their members do as law librarians for firms, courts and academia.  They will provide pizza and drinks! 

November 11, 2011, 2:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Faculty/Doctoral Student Friday (Doctoral students only)
Room 501 IS
Description: This is an opportunity for faculty and doctoral students to talk informally about  research ideas, teaching issues, conferences, future plans, etc. while enjoying light hors d’oeuvres, sodas, and adult beverages.

Joint Counseling Center/Disability Resources and Services presentation for faculty and staff (Faculty and staff only)
Room 522 IS
Description: Emily Pimpinella from the Counseling Center and Noreen Mazzocca from Disability Resources and Services will jointly provide an overview of what services are offered in their areas, dedicate some time for Q&A, and provide answers to questions  solicited in advance from faculty and staff.  Lunch will be provided.  Areas to be addressed will include:

  • how to handle referrals in a meaningful way when faculty/staff suspect there may be a counseling and/or disability issue
  • when to give students the benefit of the doubt in assignments, tests, following procedures and when to ask them to provide documentation of a counseling or disability issue
  • when to refer to the Counseling Center vs. Disability Resources and Services

November 18, 2011, 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm

Doctoral students present their research
Room 501 IS
Description: In preparation for conference sessions, admission to candidacy, dissertation defenses, etc., doctoral students need opportunities to present their research.  All faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend this session in order to give doctoral students just such an opportunity. A few doctoral students will volunteer to present at this session.  Your attendance will allow you to learn more about the research being conducted in our School while helping these doctoral student volunteers to hone in their abilities to clearly communicate their work to others.

Game night
Room 501 and 522 IS
Description:  Enjoy free food with us while sharing in a relaxed venue for socializing with other students in the School.  We will have Wii and Xbox 360 Kinect games (Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution, Yoostar, and more) as well as board games (Jenga, Monopoly, Poker, Rummikub, Set, and more).
