Brusilovsky receives Fulbright honor

Professor Peter Brusilovsky has been selected as the “Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair in Information and Communications Technologies” at the Helsinki Institute of Information, the University of Helsinki and the Aalto University in Finland. The Fulbright-Nokia Distinguished Chair is considered to be the preeminent Fulbright Scholar Program. Dr. Brusilovsky will hold this Fulbright position from August through November of 2013.

This prestigious appointment is bestowed by the Fulbright Center, which specializes in cultural and academic exchanges between Finland and North America: this non-profit organization is funded by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, the American and Canadian governments, and a Trust Fund founded by the governments of Finland and the U.S. The Fulbright Center awards approximately 90 grants to Finnish and American students, academics, and professionals annually. This year, 29 American scholars have received a Fulbright grant to lecture, conduct research, study, or teach in Finland.

During his time in Finland, Dr. Brusilovsky will undertake research and offer lectures on Learning Technologies and Adaptive Systems. He is internationally renowned for his work in this area, having secured National Science Foundation funding for a range of projects including a CAREER award for “Personalized Access to Open Corpus Educational Resources through Adaptive Navigation Support and Adaptive Visualization.”

Dr. Brusilovsky’s research accomplishments have resulted in numerous awards and accolades including the Dr. Honoris Causa degree from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava and the E.T.S. Walton Visitor Award from the Science Foundation of Ireland. Here at the iSchool, Dr. Brusilovsky created two prolific research programs: the Personalized Adaptive Web Systems (PAWS) Lab and the Teaching and Learning Research Lab (TALER). He currently serves as the Chair of the Graduate Information Science and Technology Program.
