SIS faculty awarded WISE Excellence in Online Teaching Award

02/29/2016

The University of Pittsburgh School of Information Sciences (SIS) congratulates faculty members Sheila Corrall and Ellen Detlefsen, who teach in the Library & Information Sciences department, on being 2015 WISE Faculty Award recipients.

Web-based Information Science Education (WISE) is an exclusively online learning experience that LIS students have the opportunity of participating in at SIS. Faculty from SIS and other leading information schools, such as Syracuse University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the University of Texas at Austin among others, participate in WISE to teach classes to students from participating schools in topics not available at their home institution via a web-based platform. According to WISE’s website, “The vision of this initiative is to provide a collaborative, cost-effective distance education model that will increase quality, access, and diversity of online education opportunities in Library and Information Science.”

The WISE Excellence in Online Teaching Award highlights outstanding WISE instructors and recognizes them for their dedication to quality online education. To be considered for the award, instructors must be nominated by students enrolled in their WISE course. Students nominating an instructor cannot be from the instructor’s home institution, and they must fill out a survey that includes a statement about the best aspects of the instructors teaching style, what they enjoyed most about the course and interactions with the instructor, and any other information they would like to share.

To be awarded, instructors must have taught one or more WISE course during the calendar year and demonstrated dedication to best practices in online education. SIS was one of only two participating institutions to have two faculty honored this year. This is the fifth WISE Faculty Award for Detlefsen, who was also awarded for her excellence through WISE in 2014 and in subsequent years.
