Archives, Preservation & Records Management Specialization
Master's program
Full-time students may enter this specialization in the Fall Term only.
Part-Time students may enter this specialization in the Fall and Summer Terms only.
Archives, Preservation, and Records Management students must declare themselves to be in this specialized track by October 15th of the Fall term by completing this declaration form and submitting it to their academic advisor.
Archives, Preservation and Records Management students must take the following CORE required courses:
- LIS 2000 Understanding Information is required of all students in the program. Due to sequencing requirements, Archives and Preservation students must take this course in the Fall term.
- LIS 2220 Archives and Records Management
- LIS 2222 Archival Appraisal
- LIS 2223 Archival Access, Advocacy, and Ethics
- LIS 2224 Archival Representation
- LIS 2600 Introduction to Information Technologies
Students are required to take the following courses within the specialization:
- LIS 2214 Library and Archival Preservation
- LIS 2215 Preservation Management
- LIS 2224 Archival Representation
- LIS 2674 Digital Preservation
Students will take any 3 elective courses from the list below.
- LIS 2110 Action Research: Methods and Applications
- LIS 2184 Legal Issues in Information Handling: Copyright & Fair Use in the Digital Age

- LIS 2226 Moving Image Archives (as available - prereq LIS 2220)

Required Sequencing for Archives and Records Courses for Full Time Students
This sequencing of courses provides a rigorous grounding in archival, preservation, and records management theory, methodology, and practice. Each course offers a careful building on theoretical knowledge and practical applications.

Part-Time Course of Study
Students in the archives, preservation, and records management specialization can do the program on a part-time basis. However, as most of these courses are offered only once during the academic year, it is required that students take two courses in each term of study (this also will enable students to follow a coherent course of study). Students may start in the Summer term (on a part-time basis only) with permission of the advisor.
