School of Information Sciences - Library and Information Science Program

Careers

Graduates of the Archives and Information Science pathway in the MLIS program are highly sought after for both entry-level and middle-level positions in government, higher education, museums, cultural organizations, the corporate world, and many other types of organizations.

Faculty members provide advice about preparing applications for positions and are available to assist students in considering various career options in the archives and records-management field. The Society of American Archivists Student Chapter often hosts workshops and talks on resume preparation, interviewing, and job searching. Each year, the School of Information Sciences Alumni Society hosts a Professional Development Day for MLIS students. This event includes mock interview and resume-review sessions with alumni of the program—people who are actually in the field and who hire information professionals!

The University of Pittsburgh's Career Services is a terrific resource for students. Advisors will help you to determine what career options are open to you, how to prepare your job hunting materials, and how to network effectively.
