School of Information Sciences - FastTrack MLIS Program

Courses

The MLIS program is a 12-course, 36-credit program. These courses are the same as those offered on-campus -- in fact, many of the courses are blended. This means that there are students at the University of Pittsburgh taking the course real-time -- FastTrack students will see the same lecture and discussion asynchronously. There are four required core courses; the remaining eight courses are tailored to your career goals. The core courses may be different for the various specializations. It is important to plan carefully, in consultation with your faculty advisor, to make the best use of the educational opportunities that the School provides.

Your chosen specialization will have an impact on your course selections. Field Placement experience (LIS 2921), consisting of 150 hours of supervised professional work in an approved information environment, is strongly recommended, especially if you lack professional experience. Also, students can take advantage of the Web-based Information Science Education (WISE) program, which features different courses each term.
